Unless you are an automobile manufacturer like Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo and other European manufactures. The winter tires they offer as an option are the same size as the summer and all season tires that come on their cars. Even if the OEM setups are staggered and the tires in the rear are much wider, their winter tires are still the same size as those setups. <br />

A couple of things…. I agree narrower tires for winter are generally better but it’s not mandatory and on a passenger car it’s not noticeable nearly as much as it is on much larger vehicles. Also for hard pack snow and ice, wider tires usually have the advantage. Bottom line though, it’s not if the tire is narrow or wide but more how good the winter tire is. Some winter tires are like all seasons and won’t work well in snow while others cut through it like it’s not even there. <br />

To get more traction because the vehicle is light. But you don’t need any more traction with the Mach-E. It’s plenty heavy and very well composed. Narrower will actually hurt you. I initially got 225 for my premium then installed them on a GT. I have to be very careful the first a couple of days cause every time I hit it, I break traction. And this was before I upgraded to 700 lb-ft. I’d go with the same width as OEM to promote better cornering.<br />

Yes, I’ve had Michelin X-Ice for the past 10 years (3 years with two different Mach-Es) and love the traction and quietness. I went with OEM wheels of my premium and then installed the same set on a GT. Used to be a fan of Blizzaks like you.

That’s very unusual. I’ve installed many sets (20+) of tires/wheels with new TPMS’s on every year Mach-E except a ’25 MY and all the cars have learned pressure and location within the first couple miles of driving. Some did have to drive about 10-15 miles but they all worked.</div>

I appear to have inadvertently set off yet another tire width argument - a perennial classic on auto forums.<br />
<br />
The review others posted does a good job of going into it, but "it depends" is actually the right answer. I am a general adherent of narrower tires, and I've run "pizza cutters" on my overland Tacoma for years.<br />
<br />
The reason I posted a few other size options is A) Not all sizes are in stock all the time everywhere, nice to have a few options in your pocket, B) 235s are still extremely narrow for the weight of this vehicle, I'm not out here recommending 275 snow tires, and C) A slightly wider section tire on the same wheel can provide a bit more sidewall protection which has a practical benefit in the city, especially in the winter with curbs and chunks of ice flying around.<br />
<br />
People can and should mount whatever tire they think best meets their needs, I just like providing options.</div>

Unless you are an automobile manufacturer like Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo and other European manufactures. The winter tires they offer as an option are the same size as the summer and all season tires that come on their cars. Even if the OEM setups are staggered and the tires in the rear are much wider, their winter tires are still the same size as those setups.<br />
<br />
A couple of things…. I agree narrower tires for winter are generally better but it’s not mandatory and on a passenger car it’s not noticeable nearly as much as it is on much larger vehicles. Also for hard pack snow and ice, wider tires usually have the advantage. Bottom line though, it’s not if the tire is narrow or wide but more how good the winter tire is. Some winter tires are like all seasons and won’t work well in snow while others cut through it like it’s not even there.<br />

Like everything in life, there is give and take, and the right balance is based on the car, driver and conditions.<br />

Great video for a condition-controlled track. <br />
<ul>
<li data-xf-list-type="ul">Temperature, nicely below freezing, as shown by the way the snow dusts behind the car. </li>
<li data-xf-list-type="ul">2" of packed snow</li>
</ul>The video shows accurately that in those conditions, it matters little for the tire width and handling is based on the tire profile. I would have liked to have seen a good all-season tires in the test, too - it probably would have done fairly well on the track, too, but not so well on the ice. <br />
<br />
The colder the snow and ice, the more grip all tires have. Ice at 0°F has a fair amount of grip - not so much at 25°F+ with the sun shining on it.<br />
<br />
I'd like to see the test redone with the following, real-life conditions:<br />
<ul>
<li data-xf-list-type="ul">Packing snow right around, or just above the freezing point, with 4" or more coverage</li>
<li data-xf-list-type="ul">Greasy snow, caused by a mix of road salt and snow at 2" or more</li>
</ul>This is where wider snow tires and AS tires fail, and the difference is very noticeable. We get quite a bit of that here in SW Ontario. The sporty cars with wide, low-profile winter tires struggle in that crap, even AWD models.<br />
<br />
We also get plenty of giant potholes here. Wide, low-profile tires will cost you a set of rims/tires if you aren't paying attention, and they are expensive to replace. More sidewall is good. He's right, they have a more disconnected feel, and I can't wait to get them off in the spring once the potholes get filled.</div>

If you're using snow tires you always go narrower.\n\nUnless you are an automobile manufacturer like Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo and other European manufactures. The winter tires they offer as an option are the same size as the summer and all season tires that come on their cars. Even if the OEM setups are staggered and the tires in the rear are much wider, their winter tires are still the same size as those setups. \n\nA couple of things…. I agree narrower tires for winter are generally better but it’s not mandatory and on a passenger car it’s not noticeable nearly as much as it is on much larger vehicles. Also for hard pack snow and ice, wider tires usually have the advantage. Bottom line though, it’s not if the tire is narrow or wide but more how good the winter tire is. Some winter tires are like all seasons and won’t work well in snow while others cut through it like it’s not even there. \n\nGreat short review in this subject. Jonathan is a real tire nerd. 😊",
