          <p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Pour toute personne s&rsquo;intéressant à la mythologie japonaise, il y a deux incontournables : le Kojiki (Chronique des faits anciens) et le Nihon Shoki (Annales ou Chroniques du Japon). Ils ont compilé, lors de leur écriture au VIIIe siècle, la genèse du monde, du Japon en particulier par le couple divin Izanagi et Izanami, ainsi que les péripéties de nombreux kami et la vie des premiers empereurs d&rsquo;essence divine sur le trône du Chrysanthème.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Journal du Japon vous propose, à travers une série d&rsquo;articles, <em>Kojiki, la chronique des faits anciens</em>, de tenter l&rsquo;immersion dans la mythologie japonaise et dans la pensée shintō. Pour débuter, voici les histoires du couple mythique Izanagi et Izanami, fondateur du Japon&#8230; et des ses îles !</strong></p>

Dans l&rsquo;Océan se forma la Terre qui flottait sur les eaux comme une méduse. Deux nouvelles divinités apparurent et engendrèrent, à la septième génération, le couple démiurge <strong>Izanagi</strong> (« <em>l&rsquo;Engageant</em> » ou « <em>l&rsquo;Auguste mâle</em> ») et <strong>Izanami</strong> (« <em>l&rsquo;Engageante</em> » ou « l&rsquo;Auguste femelle »).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Les dieux primitifs les chargèrent de donner une forme à cette Terre flasque qui dérivait sur les eaux. Pour accomplir leur tâche, ils leur offrirent Ame no Nuhoko, la lance céleste sertie de pierres précieuses. Les deux divinités se placèrent alors sur le pont reliant le Ciel et la Terre, le Ame no Ukihashi et brassèrent ensuite la mer salée avec la lance. Des grains de sel tombèrent de cette dernière et, se cristallisant, ils formèrent une île nommée « première terre ferme » (Onokoro) sur laquelle Izanagi et Izanami décidèrent de s&rsquo;établir.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Désirant fonder un foyer, les deux divinités construisirent une colonne centrale, l’auguste Pilier-Céleste (Ame no Mihashira), puis dressèrent un palais haut de huit fois six pieds (soit 2,5 mètres sur 1,8) d&rsquo;où son nom de Yahirodono, pour « Pièce des Huit Pas » (sachant que le chiffre 8 dans les textes shintô signifie généralement <em>complet et parfait</em>). Ils tournèrent autour du Pilier-Céleste et Izanami parla la première, Izanagi le deuxième. Même si la femme ne devait pas parler la première, le couple divin copula et eut deux premiers enfants, malheureusement difformes, à l&rsquo;image de leur premier fils Hiruko (« La-Sangsue ») qui fut abandonné quelques temps plus tard, à la dérive sur Bateau-Oiseau-Céleste (<em>cf plus bas</em>).</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Naissance du Japon, le « Pays des Huit Grandes Îles »</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Voyant donc que les enfants de leur union étaient mal formés, le couple divin alla immédiatement demander conseil aux Augustes Supérieurs Célestes. Ces derniers ordonnèrent qu’Izanagi et Izanami redescendent tourner autour du Pilier-Céleste tout en respectant l’ordre des choses (et donc en laissant la parole à Izanagi en premier). Izanagi et Izanami retournèrent tourner autour du pilier et recommencèrent.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Tour à tour, huit îles naquirent : Awaji, Iyo (plus tard Shikoku), Oki, Tsukushi (plus tard Kyûshû), Iki, Tsushima, Sado, Yamato (plus tard Honshû). Le « Pays des Huit Îles » ou Ōyashima était né (<em>vous noterez que les îles de Hokkaidô, Chishima, et Okinawa ne faisaient pas partie de l&rsquo;archipel nippon à ce moment</em>).  Naissance de Supérieurs et des éléments</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Après la naissance de ces territoires, Izanagi et Izanami commencèrent à enfanter des dieux et déesses, aussi nommés supérieurs, dont les noms donnent une idée de leur rôle ou de l&rsquo;élément dont ils ont la charge. Les dix premiers furent <em>Grand-des-Grandes-Choses</em> ; <em>Prince-de-la-Terre-Rocheuse </em>; <em>Princesse-du-Nid-Rocheux </em>; <em>Jeune-du-Soleil-de-la-Grande-Porte</em> ; <em>Souffle-Céleste</em> ; <em>Prince-de-la-Grande-Maison</em> ; <em>Grand-de-la-Jeunesse-du-Souffle-du-Vent</em> ; le supérieur de la mer <em>Propriétaire-du-Grand-Océan</em> puis celui des portes de la mer, <em>Prince-de-l&rsquo;Automne-Rapide</em> et sa sœur <em>Princesse-de-l&rsquo;Automne-Rapide</em>. Ces deux derniers, maîtres des rivières et des mers, s&rsquo;accouplèrent et donnèrent naissance à huit autres supérieurs : de <em>Mousse-Calme</em> à <em>Remplisseur-de-Gourde-de-la-Terre </em>en passant par <em>Calme-Glouglou</em> ou <em>Vagues-qui-Glougloutent</em> (<em>NDLR : des noms comme ça, on ne pouvait pas ne pas vous les mettre !</em>)</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Izanagi et Izanami continuèrent à avoir d&rsquo;autres enfants : le supérieur du vent <em>Prince-du-Vent-qui-dure</em>; celui des arbres <em>Premières-souches</em> ; le supérieur des montagnes <em>Maîtres-des-Grandes-Montagnes</em> et celle des landes <em>Princesse-des-Landes-de-Chaume qui </em>s&rsquo;accouplèrent eux aussi, donnant naissance à huit autres supérieurs.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Naquirent aussi <em>Bateau-de-Camphrie-Oiseau-de-Roche</em> appelé aussi <em>Bateau-Oiseau-Céleste</em>, qui n&rsquo;était pas, comme son nom l&rsquo;indique, un kami humain mais bien un bateau (bateau sur lequel Izanagi et Izanami abandonnèrent à la dérive Hiruko, l&rsquo;enfant déformé que nous citions plus haut) ou d&rsquo;autres kami : un kami de la nourriture ou l&rsquo;un des kami du feu, Hi no Kagutsuchi. Malheureusement, en venant au monde, Kagutsuchi brûla son auguste mère. Izanami tomba malade, s&rsquo;alita. Des supérieurs naquirent de son vomi (les <em>Prince et Princesse-de-la-Mine</em>), de ses selles (les <em>Prince et Princesse-de-l&rsquo;Argile-Visqueuse</em>) et de son urine (<em>Princesse-de-l&rsquo;Irrigation </em>et<em> Jeune-Merveilleux-Producteur</em> qui eurent un enfant, <em>Princesse-de-la-Nourriture-Luxuriante</em>). Puis elle mourut.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Izanagi pleura la mort de sa chère et tendre. La supérieure <em>Crieuse-Pleureuse</em> naquit des larmes de son père et on raconte qu&rsquo;elle réside aujourd&rsquo;hui au pied des arbres sur la pente du Mont des Biches. Fou de colère, Izanagi tua Kagutsuchi, grâce à son épée longue de dix poignées, Totsuka no Tsurugi. Du corps et du sang du fils décapité naquirent en tout seize supérieurs. Puis le veuf enterra sa femme au Mont Hiba, à la limite des anciennes provinces d&rsquo;Izumo et Hoki.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Au Pays de Yomi, le monde souterrain</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Souhaitant retrouver Izanami, Izanagi partit en route pour le Royaume des Enfers, au Pays de Yomi (le monde de l&rsquo;impur). Il l&rsquo;implora de remonter à la surface, lui rappelant que le pays qu&rsquo;ils avaient commencé de créer n&rsquo;était pas encore fini.  Le temps passa. Impatient, Izanagi fabriqua une torche avec une dent de son peigne. Il assista au triste spectacle de la décomposition du corps de sa bien-aimée par les asticots et les huit supérieurs qui étaient nés sur elle et qui la parasitaient. Terrifié, l&rsquo;Auguste mâle s&rsquo;enfuit, la mettant dans une colère noire. Pour le ramener à elle, elle envoya une myriade de sorcières appelées «Laiderons-des-Ténèbres» (Yomotsu-shikome). Izanagi les sema en transformant sa couronne en raisins et le grand peigne en tiges de bambou. Izanami le fit alors poursuivre par ses huit derniers fils, les huit supérieurs-tempêtes accompagnés d&rsquo;une horde de guerriers. Au passage séparant les deux mondes, celui des vivants et des morts (Yomotsu Hirasaka, photo ci-dessus), Izanagi y trouva trois pêchers. Lorsque les guerriers arrivèrent, il les frappa avec les pêches jusqu&rsquo;à ce qu&rsquo;ils retournèrent sur leurs pas. En guise de remerciement, il les nomma <em>Grands-Fruits-Supérieurs</em>. Face à ce nouvel échec, Izanami elle-même se mit à sa poursuite. Pour lui bloquer l&rsquo;accès, il posa un énorme rocher que même mille hommes auraient du mal à soulever, Chigaeshi no ōkami aussi appelé Yomido ni sayarimasu ōkami que l&rsquo;on pourrait traduire par <em>Grand-Kami-qui-obstrue-la-Porte-de-Yomi</em>.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Séparés par l&rsquo;obstacle, Izanami menaça son frère : « <em>Si tu fais ça, demain je prendrai mille personnes de ton pays et les étranglerai jusqu&rsquo;à ce qu&rsquo;ils meurent !</em>» Il lui répondit « <em>Si tu fais ça, moi je ferai construire mille cinq cents huttes d&rsquo;accouchement – et si mille personnes meurent chaque jour sous tes ongles cruels, mille cinq cents autres naîtront !</em> »</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Sorti sale du monde impur, Izanagi décida de se purifier. En se déshabillant dans l&rsquo;eau, douze supérieurs naquirent des vêtements et accessoires de l&rsquo;Engageant. Des ablutions d&rsquo;Izanagi quatorze supérieurs sont nés dont les trois plus importants sont les derniers nés lorsqu&rsquo;il se lava le visage :<br />
 De son œil gauche naquit Amaterasu, déesse du Soleil. <br />
 De son œil droit naquit Tsukuyomi, dieu de la Lune.<br />
 De son nez naquit Susanoo, dieu des tempêtes.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Dans ce récit, vous avez surement remarqué quelques ressemblances avec d&rsquo;autres mythologies&#8230; Izanagi et Izanagi peuvent nous rappeler Adam et Eve. Dans la Genèse de la Bible, c&rsquo;est à cause de la femme qui mangea le fruit interdit que le couple fut banni par Dieu du jardin d’Éden. À la différence que dans la religion shintō, le couple n&rsquo;est pas chassé des cieux mais envoyé donner forme à la Terre. Depuis ce pêcher originel, l&rsquo;homme est mortel. Dans le Kojiki, le cycle de la vie est expliqué par l&rsquo;épisode dans le monde souterrain où Izanami se venge de son frère en prenant chaque jour mille âmes. Cet épisode fait aussi écho à la mythologie grecque avec la descente aux Enfers d&rsquo;Orphée pour ramener à la vie son épouse Eurydice.</p>

		<p>Le passage sur la descente au royaume des Enfers est très proche de la mythologie grecque, de l&rsquo;histoire de Perséphone enlevée par Hadès, ou encore le mythe d&rsquo;Orphée qui ne doit pas regarder en arrière dans les Enfers lorsqu&rsquo;il retourne chercher Eurydice&#8230; Est-ce simplifié, ou exagéré ? Je suis tout à fait consciente que la structure des mythes du monde sont similaires, mais je voudrais simplement être certaine si je m&rsquo;en sers dans une étude. Merci !</p>

		<p>Bonjour Amandine,<br />
Oui, cet épisode du Kojiki rappelle ces deux épisodes grecs (Perséphone avec Hadès et Orphée et Eurydice). Ces ressemblances sont fortuites car les deux mythologies ne se sont pas inspirées l&rsquo;une de l&rsquo;autre. Je pense que ces ressemblances peuvent s&rsquo;expliquer par le fait que l&rsquo;homme étant mortel, le sujet de la mort ne pouvait pas ne pas être développé dans les mythes. Non abordé dans l&rsquo;article, on peut remarquer une ressemblance avec la mythologie égyptienne. En effet, Osiris y tient le rôle d&rsquo;Izanami tandis que Isis celui d&rsquo;Izanagi. Il y a une inversion des sexes. D&rsquo;ailleurs, la civilisation égyptienne était très avancée pour l&rsquo;époque dans les droits des femmes.<br />
